Top 5 Software for Macs

The following is a guest post from Dustin Hartzler of Hartzler Digital Media. Dustin shares with us his top five picks for best Mac software.

I’m a WordPress website developer and I use a MacBook Pro exclusively for all my computing needs. As developer, there are many different apps that I use on a daily basis. Today I am going to share with you my Top 5 apps that I regularly use.

evernote

Evernote – Free

I love this program. It helps me keep my head on straight and helps to keep many small pieces of paper off my desk. Evernote is a digital notebook that help you remember pretty much everything. You can capture all kinds of data; type a note, clip a web page, or grab a screenshot, and Evernote will remember it.

Once you have your idea captured, now you can organize it. You can have different notebooks for different categories, say business ideas or proposals or items you need at the grocery store, it’s that flexible.

When it’s time to recall the information, you can find it fast. You can search for notes via keywords, titles, and tags. Evernote even magically makes printed and handwritten text inside your images searchable too.

Evernote syncs your data securely with the cloud and you can access your data through a number of devices; such as you phones, iPads or computers.

skype

Skype – Free

Another great free application is Skype. It’s has replaced the landline for my business. You can call others across the US and even the world for free. What’s great about having a mac is you can also video chat for free. When I have guests come onto my podcasts I have them contact me via Skype and we talk through our computers.

text wranglerTextWrangler – Free

Another free application I use regularly is TextWrangler. This is a simple text editor but it has many more features than TextEdit, the default editor that comes with Mac OS X.

Since I publish a lot of content to WordPress websites, I have found that it is easiest to type out my content in TextWrangler then copy paste it into WordPress for several reasons. This way I can work on things offline and WordPress doesn’t import any crazy formatting when I paste in my content. It is also a great editor for HTML code and color codes the different tags.

acornAcorn – $49.95

This is one of the pricer pieces of software that I own; however, it is one app that I use almost daily. Acorn is a image editor that simple and easy to use. It has almost all of the most used features of Photoshop without paying Adobe’s hefty price.

I mainly use it to create new images, crop and resize images or draw/modify images. This program reminds me a lot of Paint for Windows but definitely has a lot more features.

It’s a very lightweight app that loads much quicker than Photoshop and it’s the best photo app that I’ve seen for the price.

screenflowScreenFlow – $99

Here’s another crucial app that I use in my business. ScreenFlow allows me to record everything that is on my screen along with audio. It even accepts high quality sound coming in front my audio mixer so I can create HD videos with excellent audio quality.

I use this software mainly to record video tutorials and webinars. Once I have completed building a site for a client I like to show them how they can keep it updated and maintained. ScreenFlow is much easier than trying to create a pdf document with every step documented. This way I can show them exactly what they need to do.
